Lew wanted two things: a dog and a drum. We got him a puppy when Lloyd fenced the back yard; I think Lew was seven. He received a snare drum as a Christmas present when he was twelve.
Drums multiple—I soon learned and the drum became a full set with cymbals.
The photo is of him practicing in our basement. (Thank you, neighbors, for putting up with the noise.)
And he didn’t just practice on the drums. Whenever we were driving in the car, he kept up a thumping on the back of my car seat as he “drummed” his fingers.
In his teens, he began playing gigs with “his” band, or bands. One was named Neon Nights. Then he joined the Harvey Mitchell blues band which played in different venues throughout Colorado.
Lew, feel free to add more info if you’d like.

I had no idea you were in so many bands! Very cool article and I especailly love the outfits and hair styles! GROOVY!!
Thank you, Lew, for adding such much detail.
Hey Mom, the real thanks goes to you! As per I practiced in the basement and Dad was traveling. I can't believe you put up with me. Thank you!
My first 'drum kit' consisted of that first snare drum, trash cans and trash can lids for cymbals. It was then, I believe my birthday a year later, that you and dad realized I was serious and bought me my first 'kit' - the one you pictured. Notice that original snare drum to my right that I used as a floor tom. I can't remember how I earned the money later to purchase a floor tom to complete the set. This 'kit' I used until I was in my late 20's…
